“Russian President Putin Congratulates Ghana on Independence Day.

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the Ghanaian people on the occasion of Ghana’s 66th Independence Day celebration. Putin expressed his best wishes for Akufo-Addo’s health and success and for peace in Ghana.

In his letter to the Ghanaian President, Putin also expressed his desire for the relationship between Ghana and Russia to continue to flourish. He acknowledged the long-standing friendly ties between the two nations and expressed his belief that these ties would help strengthen security and stability across the African continent.

It is worth noting that Ghana voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine. This comes after Russia has waged war against Kyiv’s plan to join NATO, a Euro-military bloc, over the past year

During the United Nations General Assembly vote on the resolution calling for Russia to leave Ukraine, Ghana was among the 141 nations that voted in favor, while 7 countries voted against and 32 abstained. The countries that voted against were Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia, and Syria, and among the abstentions were China, India, and Pakistan.

Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has also made it clear that Ghana is against Russia’s occupation of Ukraine and opposes the use of African countries as training grounds for foreign powers, particularly Russia. He stated this at a meeting in Washington with US government officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, on December 15, 2022, adding that Ghana has been vocal in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
