Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Resigns Amidst Theft Scandal

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, has tendered her resignation in the wake of a scandal involving alleged theft of several foreign and local currencies by her house helps at her residence.

In her resignation letter addressed to the President, Madam Dapaah stated that she decided to step down to prevent this matter from becoming a preoccupation of the government and hindering its work during this crucial time.

The scandal came to light on Friday, July 21, revealing that two house helps of the Minister were facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an amount of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from her residence in Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2022.

The accused individuals, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, allegedly stole the monies and personal effects of the couple between July and October 2022. Both have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing involving US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis.
