Security Expert Criticizes Police Risk Assessment in Allowing Picketing at Mahama’s Office

Security policy expert Mr. Anthony Acquaye has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service for their decision to permit the Fixing The Country Movement to hold a picket at the private office of former President John Dramani Mahama on November 16, 2023, in connection to the Airbus scandal.

Mr. Acquaye, who possesses a Master’s degree in Security from the Kofi Annan Peace-Keeping Training Centre, expressed his concerns on Accra 100.5 FM’s mid-day news on Friday, October 20, 2023. He argued that the police’s security assessment was notably insufficient and potentially underestimated the associated risks.

He highlighted that there is a clear potential for these gatherings to escalate into violence, particularly as the youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced their intention to organize a clean-up exercise at the former president’s office on the same day.

Mr. Acquaye questioned the rationale behind the police’s decision, describing the permit as an “avoidable mistake.” He stressed that if the situation leads to security disruptions, the responsibility should squarely rest on the police administration. He further emphasized that signs of potential tension and future conflict are apparent on various social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, and the police should have exercised more discernment in handling this matter.
