“Six Months After Reporting Junta to US, Akufo-Addo Visits Burkina Faso”

During an official visit to Burkina Faso this week, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo met with military leader Ibrahim Traore in an effort to strengthen ties between the two countries. The meeting, which took place on May 10, 2023, comes at a time when both nations are facing concerns over increasing terrorist violence.

Media outlets shared footage of Akufo-Addo’s arrival in Burkina Faso aboard Ghana’s presidential jet, where he was received by Traore at the airport. The two leaders then proceeded to the VIP lounge for their meeting before Akufo-Addo departed with Traore seeing him off. National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah and Secretary to the President Nana Asante Bediatuo were among the government officials present at the meeting.

The visit occurred six months after Akufo-Addo’s visit to Washington, where he informed the US government that the Burkinabe government had hired the Russian mercenary group, Wagner, to assist in their fight against terrorism. The allegation was denied by the Burkinabe government, and the Ghanaian ambassador was summoned to answer questions. Subsequently, Kan-Dapaah led a government delegation to Ouagadougou to address the issues related to Akufo-Addo’s comments, which were deemed undiplomatic.
