Watch:Speaker Bagbin’s Question Silences MPs: LGBTQ+ Debate in Ghana’s Parliament

On July 5, 2023, the Parliament of Ghana had a busy day as it deliberated the contentious anti-LGBTQI+ Bill. During the session, Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah Kubi, asserted that all 275 members of Parliament were in full support of the bill. However, a lighthearted moment ensued when Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, posed a question that evoked laughter from the chamber.

Appiah Kubi claimed unanimous support for the bill, prompting Speaker Bagbin to challenge this assertion by inviting any dissenting voices to speak up. Addressing the chamber, he asked, “If anyone disagrees with the statement made by honorable Andy Appiah Kubi, that all 275 members support the bill, please stand and make yourself known.” Despite the amusement, no one in the chamber stood up to express their opposition or disagreement with the bill.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities. It also aims to prohibit the promotion or advocacy of such activities while ensuring the protection and support of children and individuals affected by LGBTQ+ issues.
