News reported by some media houses and circulating on social media alleges the felling of the mysterious Okomfo Anokye Cola Nut Tree located at Feyiase. But then, let’s correct the misrepresentation of history as related to the mysterious Okomfo Anokye Cola Nut Tree. It isn’t or wasn’t a tree planted by Okomfo Anokye. To say it was planted by Okomfo Anokye means he deliberately planted it for a certain reason which isn’t the case. It grew by itself.
Why it is referred to as a mystery tree? History has it that when the then Ntim Gyakari, King of Denkyira of the old Denkyira Kingdom was ambushed at Feyiase (also known as Anokye Komam or Akoyem), he (Ntim Gyakari) was chewing red cola nut. During the ambush, he spat the cola nut on the ground. Believing that could be one of Ntim Gyakari’s spiritual weaponry to escape from the hands of the “3sa Nti (Asante)” warriors, Okomfo Anokye upon reaching where Ntim Gyakari had been arrested also chewed white cola nut and spat it on Ntim Gyakari’s.
It was from these two cola nuts that the Cola nut tree at Feyiase mostly described as the mysterious Okomfo Anokye Cola Nut Tree grew. Mysteriously, a cola nut harvested from this tree has two colors; half of it being red whilst the other half is whitish. It is factually accurate to say that it remains a mystery and history shall forever remember Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Awukugua bosom friend Okomfo Anokye.
It is only factually accurate to call this mysterious tree “The Okomfo Anokye Mysterious Cola Nut Tree” and to report that this mysterious tree has been indiscriminately felled by some unknown person(s) but it will be inappropriate to report that “The mysterious cola nut tree planted by Okomfo Anokye has been felled by an unknown person). That is because the tree was not planted (either deliberately or indeliberately) by Okomfo Anokye.
For those who have also been misled to think that the felling of the tree under discussion means a collapse of the Asante Kingdom may have to wake up from their slumber. The Asante Kingdom was not founded on the rituals of the cola nut tree. As long as the soul of the Asante federal state which is the Golden Stool lives, so does Asanteman. The Asante Kingdom is formidably stronger than ever. Our King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ababio is still in firm control of affairs. The Asante shall remain mightier.
