Three teacher unions declare nationwide strike

Three teacher unions, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have announced a nationwide strike starting on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. The strike is a result of what they perceive as the government’s neglect in addressing their working conditions. Key grievances include the withholding of teachers’ salaries, unilateral changes to timetables without consulting the unions, and delays in providing laptops to teachers. Isaac Owusu, the National President of GNAT, emphasized the importance of all teachers adhering to the directive, citing concerns over the distribution of laptops, frequent changes to school calendars, and salary blockages without following proper procedures. Consequently, the unions have jointly declared the strike action to compel the government to address their demands, effective immediately.
