Media personality Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has criticized National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama for his proposal to legalize the Okada business in Ghana. She contends that such a move would lead to an increase in road accidents, posing a threat to lives. Vim Lady expressed concern about Mahama succumbing to pressure from Okada drivers, urging him to reconsider and potentially abandon the idea to safeguard citizens. Speaking on the Egyaso Gyaso political show on Okay FM, Vim Lady strongly rebuked Mahama, stating that legalizing Okada, despite being a response to unemployment concerns, is misguided given its current status as the leading cause of accidents in Ghana. She highlighted resistance from Okada riders to safety measures, such as helmet regulations, and cited previous instances of political influence on their behavior.
In the background, Mahama had pledged to legalize the Okada business, acknowledging its prevalence and proposing regulation and training for safe operation. Despite the potential benefits for unemployed youth, Vim Lady remains skeptical of the safety implications. Okada, a crucial mode of transport, serves various communities in both remote and urban areas of Ghana, offering convenience in navigating traffic.
