Okyeame Ofori, a linguist from the Berekum Traditional Council, addressed the controversy surrounding the Asantehene and Dormaahene attending the late Berekumhene’s funeral. During an interview on Angel TV on November 23, 2024, at the funeral site, Ofori clarified that despite residing on Bono land, the people of Berekum consider themselves Ashantis. Asserting that it’s completely valid for someone from Berekum in the Bono Region to identify as an Ashanti, Ofori, speaking in Twi, emphasized their connection to Asokore and the significance of “mentia” in indicating one’s origin. He revealed that the Berekum Traditional Council, part of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, operates under the Asanteman Council. Ofori highlighted the allegiance of Berekum’s people to Asanteman and its leader, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
