Sam Nartey George has revealed that Kwamena Bartels, a veteran politician from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), apologized to him for comments made by Bartels’ daughter, Sheila Bartels. The remarks by Sheila suggested that Sam George had received financial incentives to support the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (anti-LGBTQI bill) currently before parliament.
During a press conference on December 6, 2023, the Ningo Prampram MP referred to Sheila as a supporter of same-sex relations, expressing his displeasure at her accusations. Sam George claimed, “It took her father to come and apologize to me” for the alleged financial inducement.
Sam George, along with other bill sponsors, expressed frustration that the Majority caucus did not allow the bill to proceed during parliamentary proceedings on that day. He accused the majority caucus of defying the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s order for the bill to be discussed and amendments to be made.
According to Sam George, the majority caucus is employing various tactics to hinder the bill’s passage, aiming to discredit the Speaker of Parliament, who had promised the bill’s approval before the end of 2023. He also accused Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, the chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, of deliberately being absent to provide an excuse for not taking up the bill.
