The Volta Region House of Chiefs has initiated a disaster relief fund to aid victims of the Akosombo dam spillage in the region. This structured support initiative, known as the “Volta Region House of Chiefs Disaster Relief Fund,” was launched in Ho. It commenced with an initial contribution of GHC50,000 taken directly from the House’s welfare fund.
Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the House, expressed concern about the suffering caused by the dam spillage and appealed to all to contribute to reduce the hardships faced by the affected individuals. He noted the loss of livelihoods and investments in the downstream economy and urged stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), operators of the dam, to work towards a lasting solution.
Togbe Tepre Hodo commended the support received from corporate society, state institutions, and religious bodies. He highlighted the contributions of the First Sky Group, which not only provided financial and material donations but also assisted in constructing housing units for the estimated 20,000 displaced individuals in the region. He encouraged individuals, especially those from the region living abroad, to support the relocation efforts.
The House also expressed concerns about the potential outbreak of diseases in flooded areas and called for an increase in health volunteers to safeguard human life.
To facilitate contributions, the “Volta Region House of Chiefs Disaster Relief Fund” has been established, with an account number 5011180003678 at the GCB Ho Main Branch. A mobile money (Momo) number will also be made available soon.
Traditional rulers from affected areas emphasized the need for a more equitable distribution of relief support and a long-term solution to lower Volta flooding. Osie Adza Terkpor of Avatime, Chairman of the Social Affairs and Welfare Committee of the House, stressed the importance of post-disaster reconstruction, particularly for the VRA to consider.
