On October 24, 2024, Accra witnessed a unique protest led by a lone demonstrator, Ernest Birmeh, famously known as Dr. Think Twice. Mr. Birmeh embarked on this solitary march through various parts of the capital, with a significant stop at the premises of Accra-based Despite Media, where he voiced his concerns.
Dressed in a white long-sleeved polo neck bearing the inscription “IGP – Inspector General of Pressure,” he sported dark shades and a cap. A video shared by Despite Media’s UTV captured his arrival at the station. During his journey, he was accompanied by a police van, with two officers in the front – one driving and another senior officer.
Behind him, two more officers followed, one wearing a safety vest and the other carrying an AK47 rifle. Mr. Birmeh proudly displayed the Ghanaian flag and used a megaphone while the police van’s siren blared in the background.
Mr. Birmeh’s protest aimed at addressing the numerous societal pressures faced by Ghanaians. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the pressures people encounter, such as inquiries about marriage and childbearing, saying, “Aren’t you going to get married? Why won’t you give birth? Are you sticking to only one child? Isn’t one too little?” His demonstration sought to oppose these unwarranted pressures and encourage individuals to make choices that are best for their well-being.
He also touched upon other sources of pressure, such as women pressuring men into marriage and men shouldering the financial burden of women’s education or training with the intention of marrying them later. Mr. Birmeh’s one-man protest aimed to shed light on these societal issues and prompt a reevaluation of the pressures placed on individuals in Ghana.
