The death of Shadrack Arloo has become a controversial matter in Ghana, with Gospel musician Perpetual Didier alleging that her brother was killed by police officers. The incident took place at the West Hills Mall in Accra on January 30, 2022, and according to Didier, her brother was brutalized by uniformed policemen which resulted in his untimely death.
In her video, Didier recounted out the events that led to her brother’s death. According to her, Arloo had gone to the West Hills Mall to withdraw money for a purchase he intended to send to his sister in Germany. When the police officers on duty demanded that Arloo hand over his bag for a search, he refused. This led to the police officer getting agitated and hitting and pushing Arloo to the ground, causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor, breaking his neck. Arloo is said to have lost consciousness at which point the police officer tased the motionless man on the floor, which worsened his already critical state and ultimately led to his death.
A police statement released on February 7, 2023, confirmed that Arloo had indeed resisted arrest by the police officer and was being assisted by private security guards. During the course of the arrest, Arloo is said to have pulled out a substance from his bag, which he quickly swallowed before anyone could stop him. He became unconscious shortly after and was taken to the Sonotech Clinic for medical attention, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The post-mortem examination conducted on Arloo’s body confirmed the cause of death as asphyxiation and obstruction of the airway by a foreign body. The examination revealed that the deceased had eight zipped bags containing dry leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs tied in a piece of black polythene in his throat. The retrieved substance tested positive for cannabis when submitted for forensic examination.
The death of Shadrack Arloo has sparked outrage and calls for justice. Didier has called on the Inspector General of Police to bring the responsible officers to justice. In her video, Didier emphasized that all Ghanaians have equal rights and freedom and it is unacceptable for someone to use their position to take someone’s life.
In conclusion, the death of Shadrack Arloo has sparked intense discussions about police brutality and the use of excessive force by police officers. The incident highlights the need for better training for police officers and for strict measures to be put in place to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The family of Shadrack Arloo and the Ghanaian public are calling for justice to be served and for the responsible officers to be held accountable for their actions
